Sunbelt Rentals began in 1983 in North Carolina focusing on heavy equipment for utility contractors.  Sunbelt was acquired by the UK’s Ashtead Group in 1990, growing into a major North American and international equipment rental leader known for diverse tools, turnkey solutions, and serving construction, industrial, and entertainment sectors. It’s now a global business under Ashtead, offering everything from general tools to specialized climate control, power generation, event and film production gear, with extensive locations and a focus on innovative project support.

Early Years & Acquisition (1983-1990s)

Founding: Thomas Smart established Sunbelt Rentals in Charlotte, NC, initially targeting utility contractors with equipment like trench shoring and compaction gear.

Growth: The business expanded across the Southeast U.S., reaching 38 locations by 1997.

Ashtead Acquisition: In 1990, the UK-based Ashtead Group purchased Sunbelt Rentals, integrating it into its growing international rental network.

Expansion & Diversification (2000s – Present) 

Broadened Offerings: Sunbelt expanded beyond general construction to include industrial tools, pumps, power, HVAC, fencing, ground protection, scaffolding, and more.

Specialty Divisions: Nine distinct divisions were created to cater to specialized customer needs.

Global Presence: As part of Ashtead, Sunbelt operates across the U.S., UK, and Canada, serving a vast customer base.

Events, Entertainment, Film & TV: A dedicated division provides equipment and support for the entertainment industry in North America, the UK, Ireland, and Morocco.

Current Status & Focus

Scale: A major player in the rental industry with hundreds of locations, 20+ thousand employees, and a multi-billion dollar fleet.

Services: Offers equipment rental, maintenance, technical expertise, and large-scale project solutions for commercial, industrial, municipal, events, and DIY customers.

Innovation: Focuses on empowering projects with innovative tools, safety, and sustainability, recently completing a nationwide LED lighting upgrade.
